Sviluppato in nove capitoli che, analizzando progetti e dipinti recenti, scandiscono il singolare approccio professionale di Alsop, il testo descrive il pensiero dell’architetto attraverso le varie sfaccettature del suo lavoro, mettendo così in luce l’intensità e lo spessore di un protagonista dell’architettura contemporanea internazionale complesso, controverso e molto spesso frainteso, come l’autore afferma nel capitolo conclusivo.
Il risultato dell’originale libro di Tom Porter, costruito sia intorno a un costante e meticoloso dialogo a più riprese con Will Alsop e con i suoi collaboratori e amici che a introspezioni nella storia dell’architettura e in discipline ad essa correlate, è la tessitura di una raffinata, magnetica e caleidoscopica ‘ragnatela’ i cui sottili ma tenaci fili collegano i progetti degli ultimi dieci anni della carriera di Alsop alle esperienze che hanno influenzato e trasformato il suo percorso progettuale e artistico.
Muovendo dal concetto di Tabula Rasa quale Genesi e condizione necessaria all’emergere di idee e pensieri liberi da costrizioni e preconcetti, Tom Porter ci svela come “the noise” sia il segnale che informa il processo grafico e pittorico di Alsop all’inizio di ogni nuovo progetto, ovvero come il sottile ‘brusio’ generato dal groviglio di libere associazioni si esprima attraverso una frenetica visualizzazione pittorica, costituendo così il primo passo verso la scoperta di nuove direzioni per la definizione del progetto. Questa fase, che l’autore ritiene tanto fondamentale quanto distintiva dell’unicità della figura di Alsop, tanto da dare il titolo del libro, è descritta come fondamentale per comprendere l’atteggiamento antiaccademico di Will Alsop e la sua vocazione alla ricerca e alla scoperta di immagini e suggestioni che possano poi incarnare i sogni e i desideri dei futuri fruitori dei suoi edifici. Il testo, scritto con un linguaggio fluido e contemporaneo comprensibile anche ai non addetti ai lavori, si può paragonare a un viaggio costellato di scorci e punti di vista inaspettati e sorprendenti, le cui tappe principali corrispondono alle varie fasi che sottendono l’evoluzione del processo progettuale, sia esso finalizzato ad un progetto reale che all’attività personale e speculativa di Alsop. Nel corso della lettura si comprende l’importanza dei workshops pubblici, strumenti fondamentali all’elaborazione di progetti che rispecchino i sogni delle persone, il valore umano e culturale della collaborazione tra architettura e arte e l’importanza della diversità quale elemento fondamentale di arricchimento della realtà contemporanea. Il libro, la cui innovativa veste grafica è stata ideata e curata da Mark Boyce, è corredato da un ampio numero di immagini inedite relative all’ultimo decennio di attività di Will Alsop.

Will Alsop – The Noise (Routledge, pp.169) is the title of Tom Porter’s latest book, which he finished shortly before he died on 3 April, 2010. He was the author of several fundamental texts on architecture, a lecturer and a colour expert.
The book, presented on 21 October, 2010 at the Testbed1 space in Battersea, London, during a touching commemoration of the author, describes and interprets Will Alsop’s work and personality as a total artist, far from the role of archistar and identifiable, rather, as an “architect of the people”.
Developed over nine chapters – which detail Alsop’s unique professional approach by analyzing recent projects, buildings and paintings – Tom Porter’s text describes the architect’s thought through various facets of his work, throwing light on the depth and intensity of a complex, controversial and often misunderstood protagonist of international contemporary architecture.
Tom Porter’s inspiring book is built around a dialogue with Will Alsop and his collaborators and friends. Through introspections into the history of architecture and related disciplines the author weaves a fine spider’s web, whose slender but sturdy fibres link the projects from the last ten years of Alsop’s career to the experiences which influenced and transformed his constructional and artistic course.
Starting from the concept of Tabula Rasa as a Genesis and necessary condition for the emergence of limitation- and preconception-free ideas and thoughts, Tom Porter reveals how “the noise” informs Alsop’s pictorial and architectural process at the outset of every new project, and how this subtle hubbub generated by the pile of free associations expresses itself through a frenetic pictorial visualization, forming the first step towards the discovery of new directions for the project’s definition. This phase, which the author considers peculiar to and distinctive of Alsop’s uniqueness – to the point of giving the book its title – is described as fundamental to an understanding of Will Alsop’s anti-academic stance, his vocation for research and the discovery of suggestions and images that might later embody the dreams and desires of his buildings’ future users.
Will Alsop-The Noise, written in a fluid, contemporary style comprehensible to the layman, is like a journey starred with surprising glimpses and viewpoints, whose main segments correspond to the various phases which link a project’s planning
process, whether for a real-life project or Alsop’s personal and speculative activity. We come to understand the importance of public workshops as fundamental instruments for the development of projects that reflect people’s dreams, the human and cultural worth of the collaboration between architecture and art, and the importance of diversity as a fundamental element for the enrichment of contemporary reality.
The book, with an innovative graphic look designed and executed by Mark Boyce, is complemented by many previously unpublished images from the last ten years of Will Alsop’s work.
